Ideas at Bathurst

Quetico Reflection by Vivian East

Summer is a time to pause for reflection, to turn for a moment from the media landscape of blink-and-you-miss-it news cycles, and to explore some big ideas with people who are passionate about them.

We hope to bring a bit of that feeling to our summer series on Wednesday evenings. Our speakers will share a thinker, writer or book that has sparked their interest.

The summer services are held at College Street United Church, at the north-west corner of College and Bathurst. We start with a potluck supper sharp at 6:00 p.m., followed by an informal service at 7:00 in the air-conditioned parlour.

Epiphany

The Magi

Epiphany starts after the Twelfth Night, in the new year. At this time, as we remembered the visit of the Magi, we reflected on our mission as a congregation in Toronto, and how we might work as Jesus taught us, to love our neighbour, feed the hungry, welcome the stranger, and take care of the sick.

Our series started with Cathleen Fillmore offering a reflection entitled "Intimations of Mortality." She spoke about her encounters with mortality, including her own. As Cathleen suggested, it's time for us to open up this conversation!  On January 20 the service was led by the Bathurst 2020 group, as we looked at the various possible future options for our community (the service included a congregational meeting), which was followed by our traditional Joint Holy Land joint service with Trinity St. Paul's on Jan. 27. Starting in February, we were joined by our new minister, Christine Smaller for the remaining services in this series, with a special welcoming service on Feb. 10, and her first sermon to us on Feb. 17.

The services in this series were:

  • Sunday, March 10
